What happens when your ‘Happily Ever After’ is a lie?
Queen Beauty and King Charming lived happily ever after. At least, until the birth of their daughter. Despite their invitations, none of the fairies show up to give the princess a name-blessing, something Beauty is determined her daughter should receive. Rashly, she decrees that her daughter will either have a name-blessing or no name at all. With that one decision, she unwittingly casts a dark shadow over the land.
Growing up, the princess shared her mother's dream of getting a name-blessing, but that's the only thing that they have in common. For everything else, there's the Lady in the Mirror. The Lady listens to her, and unlike her father, isn't afraid to criticise her mother, Beauty.
After many years of waiting, the fairies are finally coming, and the princess will do anything to get her name-blessing.
Anything.

Another real win from Eustacia Tan! I loved the first book in this series and the way in which everything turned dark, and this book surprised and delighted me in its continuation of the series. Happily ever after is fun, but this story turns it all on its head and gives us a glimpse of a twisted world where nothing is as it seems. It isn't tremendously long, but it is full of cool moments and details that really brought the story to life. I can't wait to find out what happens next in the Coming From Darkness series!Product details

Beauty Daughter Coming from Darkness Eustacia Tan 9789811124792 Books Reviews
First of all, I want to say that I really liked the first book of the series, The Nutcracker King. However, this book felt a little… flat compared to the previous one. It was more predictable and while the idea was good, the execution could perhaps be better. Plot-wise, it was a relatively breezy and quick read but I thought the climax was a little underwhelming.
Nevertheless, I loved the retelling of the story in an Asian setting and the reference to ancient China was very refreshing and interesting. I especially liked the map of the palace and thought it was very well drawn. My only gripe would be the tone of the characters, in particular, the princess’s. While I understand that her annoying, teenage-y manner of speech is to reflect her pubescent thoughts, it sounded overwhelmingly like a modern American teenager’s. It took away much of the magic of the setting, for me, and made it less enjoyable.
All in all, it was still an enjoyable read though. And I liked how the stories are intertwined with each other. I look forward to the next book!
This is a dark interpretation of the familiar Sleeping Beauty - what happens after when her child is born. The story is distinctly Asian, unlike the Nutcracker King, and there are some Chinese terms used, which can be a little difficult for non-Chinese learners to understand.
The story ties in well with the first book and is as gripping. Readers will also be absorbed by the skilfully-written reveals.
However, I wished that there will be a refreshing change to the 'spoiled princess' or 'rebellious teenager' archetype. The sometimes-overbearing antics of the princess may turn off the reader.
Overall though, I love it and look forward to the next book.
It's not easy being Sleeping Beauty's daughter, for one, and it's worse to be refused a name because the Fairies decided to skip your birthday! Things can only go down when you live in a fairy world without a fairy blessing.
In this tale of the fantastic and the mundane, familiar relationships are put to the test in unexpected ways. Just because your father is Charming, and your mother Beauty, doesn't mean that a happy ending is in your cards.
